Court freezes Ukraine poll result

Ukraine's Supreme Court has suspended publication of the presidential election result until it considers the opposition's complaints next
week.

Opposition leader Viktor Yushchenko appealed to the court after election officials declared Viktor Yanukovych winner of a poll widely seen as rigged. Mr Yushchenko said he had formed an emergency committee, which observers say could be an alternative government.

Thousands of his supporters also plan to blockade key buildings in Kiev.

That is victory number one. And now Canada's playing its part....
Deputy prime minister lauds decision of Ukrainian court in disputed election

OTTAWA (CP) - Deputy prime minister Anne McLellan has applauded the intervention of Ukraine's supreme court in that country's disputed presidential election.

"We are pleased to see that this matter is before the Ukrainian court and that the court will take it up," she said Thursday following a cabinet meeting. "We want to await the outcome of that judicial proceeding."

McLellan called it an important step toward ensuring the election results reflect the democratic will of the Ukrainian people.
