Shocker in the Post

The post nails big media today with this one:

Conservatives are a 'big tent' party

According to one candidate in the upcoming federal election, "most people" in his party "agree that the number of abortions in Canada is too high, and that that's got to be changed." Another candidate for the same party opposed the extension of benefits to same-sex couples on the basis that Canada was on the "slide of the slippery slope" toward gay marriage. A third opposed the extension of survivor benefits to gays and lesbians because "families are more than two people who are sexually involved." Still another helped lead the charge nearly a decade ago against including gays as a protected group in hate crimes legislation. And many others belong to what is euphemistically known within the party as the "God squad."

Based on the coverage that our federal parties receive from some media outlets, it might naturally be assumed that we're referring to Conservatives. But each of the aforementioned individuals -- Tom Wappel, Pat O'Brien, Charles Hubbard and Dan McTeague, respectively -- is not just a Liberal candidate, but an incumbent Liberal MP.

Most Canadians -- and most media outlets -- don't suggest these MPs are a liability to the Liberals. They recognize, quite rightly, that any "big tent" party must accommodate a wide range of views, and that hard-line social conservatives don't dominate the Liberal agenda. So we can't help but wonder why there appears to be a double standard when it comes to conservative parties.
