Wilco- Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
I just listened to this album again thinking that maybe the first 50 times I listened to it (about 6 months ago) I just didn't "get it". But now its official: Wilco cannot and will not live up to the critical hype...although this NME article is not that over the top..I seem to remember rollingstone and a few others being far too nice to Jeff Tweedy and co. (every rollingstone writer thought it was one of the top ten albums of 2002).
this album clearly rips off every 15 year screwing around on their acoustic guitar...but wait! there are weird electronic sounds in the background!....not interesting sounds, or sounds that really accentuate the music or add texture. no, its mostly random crap that tries to subtley rip off madonna's Music album...without any of the expert picking or interesting beats.
Why the critcal acclaim for such a sub-par wanker album? Because its "difficult" and has "indie cred" is probably why. Wilco was dropped from their label and decided to go indie with this release, and went on to sell and underdeserved 300,000 units. Holy Cow! they crowed at Rolling Stone! How indieTastic! Indieriffic! Tweedy can't sing, make a chord progression past 3 chords, or even communicate a coherent album concept, but hey! its IndieFul!The only redeeming part of this album is a song called "heavy metal drummer" which is a simple nostalgia song with a pop sing-a-long chorus. its fun, paints a great picture and is an interesting little story.
So in summation: This album is terrible and overhyped. Tweedy can't sing worth a lick and it shows. he definitely needs to start dancing and get hosed down by firefighters like Jewel in her new video if he's going to make it.
