Business Subsidies
Finally, an issue most people can get behind: an end to business subsidies in Quebec...at the provincial level anyways. At a savings of over 800 mill dollars for one fiscal year, the quebec people and small businesses will finally stop supporting failing businesses with "connections"...can you imagine the insanity of having a small business owner pay taxes only to see a massive multinational come in and get special tax advantages for locating in a town or city? There are many advantages of having a bigger business come to town, but not at the expense of others...but that example is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to bad consequences of subsidies...
What about the fact that failing businesses get free money? Where is the push to do well, if you can be subsidized by the government to the tune of several million a year, while your own executive salary ramps up and your company loses money or breaks even (Quebecor, Bombardier)?....these companies don't need handouts, they need competition and a shove towards profit making for their shareholders....the example of Bombardier is especially infuriating since the "family" owns only about 20% of the shares yet controls almost 60% of the voting rights. That's riduculous.
Getting back to the point: business and government in this country are too close at the federal and provincial governments. Its not so bad in the west, but I believe in Quebec especially, there is an unhealthy, co-dependent relationship between the two....
