Lafleur defends $536G flag bill

MONTREAL -- An ad exec yesterday defended using federal sponsorship funds meant to boost Canada's visibility to buy a giant Quebec flag for Montreal's Olympic Stadium. Jean Lafleur said he spent $536,800 in sponsorship money to have both the fleur-de-lys and Canadian flag fly in the Montreal Expos' home in 1995 to avoid any trouble with the Quebec government.

And Lafleur insisted his staff worked 1,768 hours for the $300,000 billed to manage the Expos sponsorships.

"It takes a lot off work to do all that," Lafleur insisted, pointing to meetings with former sponsorship head Chuck Guite and the Expos.

"It seems easy today, but even just going to the stadium, that's a lot of work."

Is anyone buying this crap?
