Last week a student killed a teacher from his old elementary school near Osaka. This week we learn of another horrific crime by a young man in Chiba.

Teen murdered to keep her quiet about sham marriage

CHIBA (Kyodo) A 23-year-old man was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison for beating to death and torching the corpse of his 16-year-old wife to keep her quiet about their sham marriage.

The locals are a tad nervous. This is a society with very low crime, and this type of thing makes big headlines here. Of course, crime was much higher during the '50's and '60's in Japan, and in comparison to the west, Japan's crime rate sparkles.
