Judge Gomery: Shining a Battle Light
Time for some action
Just a fraction of friction
I got the clearance
To run the interference
Into your satellite
Shining a battle light

Gomery

Gomery is in hot water in some circles for doing two things:
1) He said that Guite was a 'charming scamp'.
2) He said the sponsorship file was 'run in a catastrophically bad way'

Let's deal with the 'transgressions' individually. The first comment is not exactly showing impartiality, I suppose, because the judge has 'pre-determined' a mildly positive impression of a figure most Canadians believe is a jackass. Why some Liberals would see this as 'unacceptable' is beyond me.

As for the second comment, he is not exactly breaking new ground. Even the people who ran the file (Guite), would probably say the same thing. Even people who are barely aware of adscam can see that giving Quebec ad firms 'money for nothing and chicks for free' is a bad thing. Should Gomery be fired? Nope. He probably should have kept his mouth shut, but after 3 months of listening to these tales of Liberal shenanigans, he can bloody well come to a conclusion of how this thing was run.

The real question is why Liberals who may or may not be appearing before Gomery later in the hearings are saying a)let's stop the proceedings, and/or b) fire Gomery immediately.

Why is it that these same Liberals (and their apologists) have all of a sudden become so high and mighty on 'ethics', when they have defended and continue to defend the consistent and blatant corruption and abuse of power in the Chretien regime?

Why didn't they have the same problem with Gagliano, the BDC 'phone calls', Grand Mere, Guite, Jean Carle, Shawinigate, or Jane Stewart? Where was their hyper-intense sense of righteous indignation?

As a general rule of thumb, I'd say the more the Chretienites squirm, the closer we get to the truth. Their opposition to some minor indiscretions by Gomery is only a symptom of their fear.
