OTTAWA (CP)
David Scott, another lawyer for Chretien, said Gomery had "made it clear you had drawn some factual conclusions in the midst of the inquiry."
Scott accused the judge of being "adversarial" against Chretien. He referred to one of Gomery's remarks in the interviews in which the judge said a series of taxpayer-funded golf balls stamped with Chretien's signature were "small-town cheap."
The challenge by Chretien's lawyers comes days before the former prime minister's potentially explosive appearance at the inquiry.
Chretien will be pressed on how much he knew about $100 million from a $250-million national-unity program that went to Liberal-friendly advertising firms.
Our truth and reconciliation commission is facing a severe test. If Chretien beats Gomery, it'll be like the Afrikaaners getting away with murder. We gotta make sure this guy gets tuned, justice-style.
Gomery has to realize that they would come up with anything to delay/nix Chretien's appearance, and that they are only pouncing on the available material. Chretien should be so lucky to find that no one has put him through the same scrutiny-yet.
