A few months ago there was speculation that the massive explosion on a North Korean train was aimed at Kim Jong-Il, as he was returning from China. The explosion was thought to be perpetrated by radical groups working to overthrow the madman. Is this the work of radical democrats? Careless nuclear workers? This is similar to Chernobyl in that word of the nuclear event took a long time to reach the outside world.
Huge explosion in North Korea last week: report
SEOUL : A huge explosion rocked North Korea's northern inland province of Ryanggang last week, triggering a mushroom-shaped cloud near the country's secret underground military base, South Korean news agency Yonhap said.
The explosion appeared to be stronger than an April 22 rail blast which killed more than 150 people near the border with China. However, there were no indications that it was a nuclear blast.
The explosion went off in Kimhyungjik county near the Chinese border on Thursday last week, when North Korea marked the 56th anniversary of its founding, Yonhap said, quoting an unnamed source in Beijing.
The county has an underground base for missiles and a suspected plant for enriching uranium, according to the Nuclear Threat Initiative, a private disarmament think tank.
There was no word on the blast from the highly secretive North Korea, which did not report the April rail accident in Ryongchon, near the western tip of North Korea's border with China, for three days.
The US and the South Koreans are discounting a nuclear explosion. I'm not sure why, but if they are wrong or just putting out the wrong information, the South could be in for some radiological fallout...and would be caught unprepared.
The North Korean News has nothing on the blast, of course. Funny stuff.
Here's the google rundown.
