The Ontario Liberals hired Prime Minister Paul Martin's top adviser to do polling and give strategic advice on the controversial provincial budget that raised taxes, the Star has learned.

In a move that Queen's Park insiders say was designed to ensure Martin does not attack Premier Dalton McGuinty for breaking campaign pledges, David Herle was paid to do pre-budget polling.

Sources say Herle, co-chair of the federal Liberal campaign and a principal at Earnscliffe Strategy Group, was privy to all contentious policies outlined in last week's budget.

"The McGuinty Liberals knew that the budget had to contain tough measures. They also knew they'd receive complaints about those measures from their federal cousins," said one senior Liberal.
